ALS, one page both sides, 6 x 8, May 4, 1943. Handwritten letter to Mr. [William E.] Chamberlain, in part: “Thank you so very much for your kind offer to appear with the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra Association which I most sincerely regret being unable to accept owing to the fact I shall be making a picture at the time (mid May to the end of June) & unfortunately we work on Saturdays which makes it impossible for me to get up North & back again by 9 am (ready & make-up) on Monday!” In fine condition, with a thin line of toning to the bottom of the first page. The movie Rathbone refers to is Sherlock Holmes Faces Death, which was released in September 1943. That same year, William E. Chamberlain was serving as the managing director of the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra, which performed at Berkeley, California.
