ALS signed “W. M. Thackeray,” one page, 4.5 x 7, November 19, [1860 or 1861], embossed Cornhill Magazine letterhead. Handwritten letter to Mr. Hall, who submitted a work for publication, in full: “The article is very lively, well-written, and pleasant BUT (now it’s coming out!) – but the plot I think won’t do for us. So I fold up your Corazza and return it with many thanks, and not a little regret to send back such a merry little paper.” In fine condition, with faint toning from prior display. Thackeray was editor of the Cornhill from its beginning in January 1860 to April 1862, when ill health forced his retirement, thus dating this letter to 1860 or 1861.
