Description

Original broadside from The Press Democrat (Santa Rosa, California), one page both sides, 8 x 11.5, issued as No. 93 on April 19, 1906, the day after a 7.9 earthquake claimed over 3,000 lives in the San Francisco area on April 18, 1906. The broadside provides up-to-date information on the earthquake, the resulting destruction, injuries and deaths, and efforts to help survivors. Headings and subheadings include: “A Dreadful Catastrophe Visits Santa Rosa,” “San Jose is in Ruins,” “Sacramento Damaged,” “A Horrible Scene in San Francisco,” “Los Angeles Spared,” “Roosevelt Offers Aid,” “Charred Remains,” and more. In very good to fine condition, with light creasing and short edge tears. While San Francisco suffered the heaviest damage, surrounding, less publicized areas such as Santa Rosa with 64 known deaths also suffered a heavy toll.
