While he painted a variety of subjects in various media, his fame rests primarily on his evocative, penetrating society portraits. ALS signed “J. S. S.,” penned on both sides of his personal 3 x 1.5 calling card, no date. Brief handwritten letter, in full: “I forgot to tell you that the Robinsons & Miss Paget, who is staying with them, live at No. 84 Gower Street. Here is a card of introduction to them in case you care for it.” In fine condition.
