Description

Panel screw attested to as having been carried into lunar orbit as part of the Apollo 15 Command Module Endeavour, originating from the estate of NASA engineer Donald T. Hamilton, who was involved with processing the CM after its successful splashdown on August 7, 1971. The National Aerospace Standard (NAS) right-hand panel screw, with .75˝ diameter head, is marked as “NAS1623C” and mounted in a 6 x 8 framed display with color image of the Apollo 15 launch. Label on reverse reads: “This NAS1623C screw was fastened to the Apollo 15 command module, Endeavour, during its voyage to the moon in 1971. It was recovered from the spacecraft during postflight testing by Donald T. Hamilton (1930-2006), a distinguished NASA project engineer who later worked on the Skylab, Spacelab, and Shuttle programs. While modest, this screw is an essential piece of space history. It played a simple but vital role on Endeavour as it launched from Cape Kennedy aboard a Saturn V rocket, traveled to the moon, orbited while the Falcon lander journeyed to the lunar surface, and returned safely to earth.” In fine condition.
