Description

Navy Distinguished Service Medal issued to Apollo 12 moonwalker Alan Bean, measuring 1.25˝ in diameter and surmounted by a white five-pointed star with a central gold-tone anchor, both of which are suspended from a 1.5˝ long navy-and-yellow ribbon pin. The gilt bronze medallion features an American bald eagle in the center surrounded by scroll waves and a blue enamel ring with golden text: “United States of America, NAVY”; the reverse depicts a trident surrounded by a laurel wreath, which is encircled by waves and a blue enamel ring with the inscription: “For Distinguished Service.” The medal is housed in its original presentation box, stamped "Distinguished Service Medal" on the lid, along with its matching ribbon bar and lapel pin. In fine condition, with wear to the box. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Amy Bean, the daughter of Alan Bean.

Alan Bean received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal twice, in 1970 and 1973, in honor of his extraordinary achievements and contributions to the U.S. space program, including his participation in the Apollo 12 mission and his leadership in the Skylab missions.
