Gene Kranz’s bracket-bound reference manual that he used extensively in his role as Chief Flight Director at Houston’s Mission Control Center during the historic Apollo 11 mission and all subsequent Apollo missions thereafter, signed prominently on the front cover in black felt tip, “This book was at my side on the console every mission — to rapidly provide the details of mission options, Eugene F. Kranz, ‘Flight.’” The front cover also bears two labels: one annotated “A11 / 6,” and another with typed text: “Apollo 11, O.T., Abort Plan, Alt. Plan, Views S/C, Att. Profile.” Accordingly, the manual contains three main sections: a group of 11 “Apollo Mission 11 Alternate Flight Plans”; a NASA manual entitled “Spacecraft Operational Trajectory for Mission G, Volume I, Operational Mission Profile, Launched July 16, 1969”; and a NASA manual entitled “Operational Abort Plan for Apollo 11 (Mission G).” The spine is marked in black felt tip, “11,” as is the upper right of the front cover, “2-1-7.”
The opening section, “Apollo Mission 11 Alternate Flight Plans,” contains a set of 11 fold-out alternate mission flight plans, which are as follows: “1. One Additional Rev Required Prior To Undocking, 2. CSM Only Low Earth Orbit (No TLI), 3. CSM/LM Low Earth Orbit (No TLI), 4. CSM High Apogee Earth Orbit (Partial TLI), 5. CSM/LM High Apogee Earth Orbit (Partial TLI), 6. CSM/LM Lunar Flyby, 7. CSM Only Lunar Orbit, 8. CSM/LM in Lunar Orbit (No-Go for Landing), 9. CSM/LM in Lunar Orbit (DPS No-Go for Burn), 10. CSM/LM in Lunar Orbit (DPS LOI), 11. CSM/LM in Lunar Orbit (DPS TΕΙ).”
The next section, the revised NASA manual “Spacecraft Operational Trajectory for Mission G, Volume I, Operational Mission Profile, Launched July 16, 1969 (MSC Internal Note. 69-FM-98),” contains five main sections related to the mission’s flightpath: Summary and Introduction, Symbols and Nomenclature, Primary Guidelines and Constraints, Mission Summary, and Input Data.
The third, NASA manual “Operational Abort Plan for Apollo 11 (Mission G) (MSC Internal Note No. 69-FM-162), consists of 10 main sections relative to an Apollo 11 abort: Summary, Introduction, Abbreviations, Guidelines and Constraints, Launch Phase, Earth Parking Orbit, Translunar Injection and Translunar Coast Phase, Lunar Orbit Insertion and Lunar Orbit Phase, Transearth Injection and Transearth Coast Phase, and Conclusions. In fine condition.
