Soviet composer (1906–1975) whose fifteen symphonies occupy a place of central performance in the orchestral literature of the twentieth century. TLS in Russian, signed “D. Shostakovich,” one page, 8.25 x 11.75, July 9, 1973. Letter to a young English listener, responding to his question about differences in recordings of his Fifth Symphony. In full (translated): "I am not a supporter of a dictatorial attitude towards performers. I believe that every performer can play this or that piece the way he likes. The tempos of Eu. Ormandy and M. Shostakovich suit me quite well, but perhaps what appeals to me more than others are the tempos performed by conductor Mravinsky." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Shostakovich's hand and incorporating his name within the return address.
