Kensley in Boston regarding the 1880 presidential election and the state of the Republican Party, which saw President U. S. Grant seeking an unprecedented third term in office. In part: "I was sorry not to see you again before leaving Mass'tts. In our conversation a week ago I may have expressed myself with more earnestness than necessary but when I get on that subject I am very apt to become interested. It had the effect after you left of drawing out the admission that the 'third-term' movement resulted rather from 'weakness' than strength of the Republican Party. On Monday I went up in the country and found matters looking quite as favorable. The papers of Worcester (Spy), Leominster, Fitchburg & Gardner are opposed to the third term & friendly to Sherman…The Sherman interest is growing rapidly in other parts of the country and I think it would be well to let the real feeling that exists in Mass'tts be known at an early day."
