American author and Unitarian clergyman (1822–1909) remembered for his short story 'The Man Without a Country.' Two items: an AQS signed "Edward E. Hale," one page, 8 x 5, Thanksgiving Day, 1898, in full: "So South and North the food send forth to meet the nations' need, / So black and white, with main and might, the hungry peoples feed. / Since God bade man subdue the earth, and harvest-time began, / Never in any land has earth been so subdued by man!"; and an ALS signed "Edward E. Hale, one page, 5 x 8, November 30, 1898, in part: "Perhaps you will like to read a part of the ballad of the 'Great Harvest Year,' before it is printed. It will be in the next number of Harper's Magazine." In fine condition, with light show-through from old mounting remnants on the back, and a partial split to the letter's horizontal fold.
