American political scientist and diplomat (1904–1971) whose receipt of the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for mediation in Israel made him the first black Nobel laureate. TLS signed “Ralph J. Bunche,” one page, 8.5 x 11, United Nations letterhead, February 19, 1963. Letter to Leonard V. Fulton, in part: "I do not think that there should be a 'dilemma' about what you should tell your son about peace and war. I believe you can tell him that there is sound basis for hope that peace can be made to prevail, and that a strong United Nations can be decisive in this respect. There is, in fact, very much that you can tell him about the role and responsibility of every individual in helping to secure peace. Tell him that wars are conceived in the hearts and minds of men, in the attitudes of peoples toward each other. Wars grow out of human suspicions, fears and hates. If people can free themselves of prejudices and bigotries in their own communities and learn to live together in understanding and fellowship, there is hope that people collectively can do so and that therefore nations can learn to live together in peace. I believe this is possible and consequently I am hopeful about the future. But it will take much will and much effort by all of us, as individuals, to bring this about. The place to start, of course, is in the home and the local community." In fine condition.
