Description

Three TLSs from Apollo moonwalkers Charles Conrad, Gene Cernan, and Jim Irwin, each one page, ranging in size from 4.75 x 6 to 8 x 10.5. The Conrad letter, NASA letterhead, January 11, 1963, less than four months after his astronaut selection as part of NASA’s ‘New Nine,’ sent to Betty MacPhail, in part: “It was very thoughtful of you to write to me and I am pleased that you are enthusiastic about manned space flight activities. As we embark on a new and challenging mission within the space flight program your interest, and that of many other Americans, is certainly an inspiration to us.”

The Cernan letter, personal letterhead, July 22, 1991, sent to Bob Hemminger, in part: “My advice to any young person is to begin by setting short term goals. You have to look at short range opportunities and strive to do your best at whatever you do. All that anyone can ever ask of you is to do your best, whatever your pursuit may be. If you do a good job at something, then other opportunities are going to come along. The process of reaching or attaining a goal is like climbing a ladder—the first step is easy, the last step is the hardest, but the view from up top made it all worth while! When I was your age, I had no idea that I would ever walk on the moon—and yet one day I found myself standing there, looking back at the beauty of the earth. If you are willing to accept the challenges that lie ahead, endless opportunities await you.”

The Irwin letter, no date, headed “Apollo 15,” reads: “It was an honor and a thrill to have taken part in the great team effort that was Apollo 15. The entire project required the hard work and dedication of many men and women along with the entire Nation. We all, as Americans, can feel proud to have been the first people to explore the lunar surface. I thank you for your kind letter and I am truly sorry that I do not have the time to give you a much longer response.” In overall fine condition.
