Description

Wife (1860-1930) of composer Giacomo Puccini. ALS in Italian, signed “Elvira,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 6.5 x 8.25, black-bordered mourning letterhead, December 12, 1924. Untranslated handwritten letter about her tragic days of sorrow following Puccini's death on November 29, 1924. Though their relationship was severely strained by the composer's infidelities—and her inaccurate accusation of an affair with Doria Manfredi—she offers sincere expressions of sorrow in the aftermath of his death. In very good to fine condition, with tears and paper loss to the borders, and tape repair to the central horizontal fold. Accompanied by a telegram signed by their son, Antonio, announcing the death of his father in Brussels.
