Significant postwar military commission from President Johnson, appointing legendary artillery tactician Henry Jackson Hunt as a Brevet Major General

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 16 x 19.75, April 20, 1865. President Johnson appoints Henry J. Hunt as a “Major General by Brevet.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Andrew Johnson, and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. The blue embossed War Office seal remains affixed to the upper left. In fine condition. Henry Jackson Hunt served as Chief of Artillery in the Army of the Potomac (1819-1889) during the American Civil War. Considered by many as the greatest artillery tactician and strategist of the war, Hunt’s tactics affected the outcome of many important battles, including Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg.
