Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 14.25 x 17.5, February 25, 1853. President Fillmore appoints Henry J. Hunt as a “Captain in the Second Regiment of Artillery.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Millard Fillmore, and countersigned by Secretary of War Charles M. Conrad. In very good to fine condition, with some light creasing, small stains, and a missing seal. Henry Jackson Hunt served as Chief of Artillery in the Army of the Potomac (1819-1889) during the American Civil War. Considered by many as the greatest artillery tactician and strategist of the war, Hunt’s tactics affected the outcome of many important battles, including Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg.
