Four front page sections from early 1960s American newspapers with headlines and imagery related to NASA’s historic Mercury spaceflight program, ranging in size from 11 x 16.5 to 15 x 21.5, each signed and inscribed in red or black felt tip by the pictured astronaut: “All my thanks, To Pete for a good job, Gordon Cooper” (Shawnee News-Star, June 30, 1963); “For John ‘Pete,’ with many thanks and best personal regards—Scott Carpenter” (The Denver Post, June 6, 1962); “Best wishes, John—Wally Schirra” (Honolulu Star-Bulletin, October 3, 1962); and “Best regards to John — and many thanks for all the help, J. H. Glenn, Jr.” (February 20, 1962). The newspapers, which appear to be affixed to mounts, are individually framed to overall sizes ranging from 18.5 x 22.75 to 22.5 x 26.75. In overall fine condition.
Originates from the personal collection of NASA employee John ‘Pete’ Peterson, who served in various capacities of media relations at NASA and the Manned Spacecraft Center from about 1961 to about 1973. He first served as the head of News and Media Relations, reporting to Paul Haney, and later as a special assistant to several of the chief astronauts. Due to his military and media background—Peterson was a retired Army captain who served in both WWII and the Korean wars—he befriended and became close to several of the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab astronaut crews.
