Uncommon partly-printed DS as secretary of war, signed “Jas. Monroe,” one page, 7.75 x 10, War Department letterhead, October 24, 1814. Application for a military appointment issued to Horace Webster, in full: “Herewith enclosed you will receive the appointment of Cadet in the service of the United States. Should you accept the appointment, if which you are required immediately to advise this department, you will repair to the Military Academy at West Point, State of N. York, and report yourself to the commanding officer.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by James Monroe. In very good to fine condition, with a short tear to the bottom edge, and splitting to the ends of the folds.
