Description

President Cleveland responds to a letter announcing the establishment of the Greater Republic of Central America, a short-lived political union between El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 7.75 x 10, Executive Mansion letterhead, December 29, 1896. President Cleveland directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to “an envelope containing my answer to a letter from the Diet of the Greater Republic of Central America announcing the formation of that Government.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Grover Cleveland. In fine condition.

The Greater Republic of Central America, originally planned to be known as the Republic of Central America, was a short-lived political union between El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, which lasted from 1896 to 1898. It was an attempt to revive the failed Federal Republic of Central America that existed earlier in the century. The three countries agreed to establish a union with the signing of the Treaty of Amapala on June 20, 1895, and on September 15, 1896, after the countries had all ratified the treaty individually, the union was formally confirmed. The republic was rechristened the ‘United States of Central America’ when its constitution came into effect on November 1, 1898.
