Civil War-dated ALS from a Confederate prisoner, signed “Will. A. Red,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, April 20, 1865. Addressed from “Military Prison, Johnson's Island,” a handwritten letter to his cousin Mollie, in part: “Your acceptable little missive, couched in language expression of much grief and despondency, met a warm and sympathetic greeting…My prison home has been frequently gladdened by those dear little missives—assurances that, though a captive in a distant clime, yet I am not forgotten. Events of the past few weeks, so disastrous to our cause, have crushed the last hope within my bosom. It is useless, I think, to longer disguise that which will crush every southern heart. We are today, I fear, a conquered people…God alone knows what is to become of us…We have had large accessions to our numbers here about seven hundred officers belonging to the Army of Northern Virginia (Genl Lee's) have recently arrived.” In fine condition.
