Letter to Commander William McBlair, in full: “Your letter of the 7th instant has been received. The duty to which you are assigned is regarded as important to the best interest of the Confederacy. The Department is aware of the desire of officers of the Navy to be employed in their own profession, but the army batteries require the services of some of them, and in detailing them the Department will, as far as practicable, consult their preferences in connection with the public interests. The Department is also aware of your high standing as an officer, and will endeavor to give you a command.” In fine condition, with two faint vertical lines of toning.
