When President Roosevelt personally nominated Samuel Mandelbaum (1884–1946) to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on June 15, 1936, the decision was widely criticized. Due to Mandelbaum’s political background and perceived lack of judicial experience, the selection was seen as a clear case of political patronage; Mandelbaum was a loyal supporter of Roosevelt and a significant figure in the Democratic Party. Of additional interest, the day before he wrote this letter, FDR, in front of an estimated 1,000 onlookers, laid the cornerstone of the Roosevelt Library and Museum in Hyde Park, NY—the first Presidential library within the National Archives.
