Union Army general (1817-1887) who was shot four times and captured at the First Battle of Bull Run. Learning that he was still alive on the battlefield, his wife Fanny passed through enemy territory and spent four days searching for him before finding him at a makeshift hospital. She tended to him as a nurse, accompanying him as a prisoner of war to Richmond and entering captivity to continue his care. Ricketts would be exchanged in December 1861, having made a partial recovery. Handsome 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of Ricketts in uniform, neatly signed in ink, "James B. Ricketts, Bvt. Maj. Gen. U.S.A." Published by Alexander Gardner of Washington, with a three-cent revenue stamp affixed to the reverse. In fine condition.
