Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 12.5 x 16.75, April 27, 1816. President Madison appoints John White as "a Lieutenant in the Navy in the Service of the United States." Crisply signed at the conclusion in ink by President James Madison, and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Benjamin W. Crowninshield. The white paper seal affixed at the bottom remains intact. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds with one small hole, soiling and wrinkling, staining to the right edge and seals, and fading to the handwritten portions (other than Madison's signature, which is bold and unaffected).
