Large and impressive 17.25 x 23 engraved portrait of Abraham Lincoln in a bust-length pose, painted and engraved by W. E. Marshall, circa 1866. Attractively matted and framed to an overall size of 25.5 x 31.5. In fine condition.
This is widely considered one of the finest likenesses of President Lincoln produced by any American artist. The article 'Marshall's Engraving of Lincoln,' published in Lincoln Lore No. 591 (August 5, 1940), reports that his son, Robert Todd Lincoln praised the portrait: 'I take pleasure in testifying to its excellence as a likeness. I cannot suggest any improvement.' Senator Charles Sumner wrote: 'It will always be valued as presenting the original in his most interesting expression, where gentleness and sympathy unite with strength.' Secretary of War Edwin Stanton found it to be 'a beautiful likeness of that great and good man.' A handsome and most desirable image of Lincoln.
