Vintage glossy 8 x 10 photo of Joe Biden early in his political career, signed and inscribed in the lower border in black felt tip, "To Barry, with best wishes, Joe Biden, USS 1974.” In very good to fine condition, with some minor irregularities to the emulsion and a crease to the lower right corner tip.
Biden was elected to the United States Senate in November 1972, and was sworn into office on January 5, 1973, by secretary of the Senate Francis R. Valeo in a small chapel at the Delaware Division of the Wilmington Medical Center: he was there to care for his son, Beau, who had been injured in a car accident that took the lives of Biden's wife and one-year-old daughter. He would famously begin commuting every day by an Amtrak train—ninety minutes each way from his Delaware home—to Washington, D.C., a practice he continued throughout his Senate career.
As senator, Biden focused on consumer protection, the environment, crime, and foreign policy; he would go on to serve as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In January 2009, Biden resigned from the Senate to serve as vice president for a different "Barry"—Barack Obama—after they won the 2008 presidential election.
