Complete issue of The Connecticut Courant, and the Weekly Intelligencer, from Monday, March 10, 1788, four pages, 10.25 x 16.25, printed by Hudson and Goodwin of Hartford, with the front page featuring a lead article entitled “Proceedings of the Convention of Massachusetts (Continued from our last),” which contains the latest developments of the Massachusetts Ratifying Convention that met in Boston from January 9, 1788, to February 5, 1788, to discuss ‘the adoption of the federal Constitution.’ On the documented day, January 22, 1788, delegates were occupied with Article I, Section 8, which sets out the bulk of Congress’s enumerated legislative authorities. The section was supported by notable figures such as Judge Increase Sumner, Nathaniel Gorham, Christopher Gore, William Phillips, and James Bowdoin, but was criticized by Samuel Willard who quoted “ancient history” to demonstrate how power corrupted the best of men. Additionally, Benjamin Randall and William Symmes ‘feared a consolidation’ and an abuse of delegated power. The reverse of the last page bears an affixed two-page supplement containing a variety of advertisements. In fine condition.
