Union general (1831–1869) who served as Grant's aide-de-camp and later as a brigadier general. A close friend and confidant of Grant, Rawlins was appointed secretary of war at the start of his presidency. Civil War-dated partly-printed DS, signed “Jno. A. Rawlins,” one page, 6 x 3, Headquarters, Department of the Tennessee form, June 27, 1863. Union vessel pass issued “Near Vicksburg” to Captain Orlando H. Ross: “Guards, Pickets, and Any United States Chartered Steamer will pass Capt. O. H. Ross, A. D. C. [newly-appointed to the staff of Grant] at all times from this place to any point on the Miss. or Yazoo Rivers and return.” Signed boldly at the conclusion by John A. Rawlins as assistant adjutant general. Lower caption text reads: “Boats carrying passengers under this pass will be entitled to no compensation except under their charters. This pass does not include Subsistence.” Affixed to a same-size mount and in fine condition, with vertical folds and neatly trimmed edges.
