Career United States Army officer, college professor, and general (1821-1908) in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He fought in many of the most significant battles in the Western Theater of the war and briefly took command of the Army of Tennessee in 1865. Civil War-dated partly-printed DS, signed “Alex. P. Stewart, Brig. Genl.,” one page, 8.75 x 6.25, July 29, 1862. Confederate States of America military services payment receipt, filled out and signed by Brigadier General Alexander P. Stewart, who affirms that he received $602 from Captain H. T. Massingale for two months of service, from May 1, 1862, to June 30, 1862. Signed at the conclusion by Stewart. In fine condition, with light staining, and a small hole to the upper left corner.
