Colonial military officer during the French and Indian War, and a general in the Continental Army during the Revolution (1738–1824) who, as an organizer of the Ohio Company, was instrumental in the initial settling of the Northwest Territory. Revolutionary War-dated ADS signed “R. Putnam, Col’o Com’d,” one page, 8.25 x 2.25, August 5, 1779. A brief handwritten attestation from Putnam: “Sworne before me in Camp at Ft. Montgommery.” Signed at the conclusion by Rufus Putnam. Affixed to a 10.5 x 6.5 backing sheet and in fine condition.
