Description

New Hampshire native and military officer (1728-1822) known for coining the phrase that became the state motto, 'Live Free or Die.' He served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, participating in the Battles of Bunker Hill, Trenton, Princeton, and Bennington, becoming widely known as the 'Hero of Bennington' for his exemplary service in the latter. Revolutionary War-era autograph document signed “John Stark,” one page, 6 x 1.75, April 26 [1775]. Brief handwritten plea “to Deliver to Capt Hutcheson stores for 9 men.” Signed at the conclusion by Stark. In fine condition. A week earlier, on April 19, 1775, John Stark returned to the Army after the Battles of Lexington and Concord. He was appointed colonel of the 1st New Hampshire Regt. on April 21, 1775, and immediately began to recruit for the regiment. A search of the New Hampshire records of the Revolutionary War could not identify a Captain Hutchison in the 1st New Hampshire Regiment. However, records indicate that a Captain Gordon Hutchins entered Col. Stark's Regiment on April 23, 1775.
