President Pierce directs the Secretary of State to affix "the Seal of the United States to my ratification of the Treaty with the Kaskaskia and Peoria, Piankeshaw and Wea Indians." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by President Franklin Pierce. In fine condition. Accompanied by an official printing of the text of the treaty, by which these tribes "cede and convey to the United States, all their right, title and interest in and to the tracts of country granted and assigned to them" by previously concluded treaties.
Signed on May 30, 1854, ratified on August 2nd, and proclaimed by President Franklin Pierce on August 10th, this treaty recognized the union of these various tribes as the Confederated Peoria Tribe. In addition to this recognition, the treaty also provided for the disposition of the lands of the constituent tribes set aside by the treaties of the 1830s; ten sections were to be held in common by the new Confederation, each tribal member received an allotment of 160 acres; the surplus land was to be sold to settlers and the proceeds to be used by the tribes.
