Description

Grifted by his studio, the star of The Sting seeks proper compensation from Universal Pictures

DS, three pages, 8.5 x 11, March 30, 1977. Document headed "Audit Settlement Agreement," related to claims for unpaid monies due by Universal Pictures "with reference to the motion picture entitled 'The Sting,'" following an audit conducted by the accounting firm of Solomon & Finger. Under the agreement, Universal is "to pay to the Participants the sum of $225,000," including $54,000 to Newman. Signed at the conclusion in green ink by Paul Newman, and countersigned by a representative of Wildwood Enterprises. In fine condition.

The Sting, a caper film starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford as professional grifters, made over $68,000,000 in the North American box office, and it was the highest-grossing film of 1974. For his participation, Newman received top billing, $500,000 and a percentage of the profits—some of which had to be recovered through audits and litigation. Lawsuits related to royalties due from The Sting continued into the late 1980s.
