DS, two pages, 8.5 x 11, June 30, 1988. Agreement between Warner Bros. and Michael Keaton, in part: "We hereby employ you and you hereby accept such employment to perform such development consulting services for us and/or our designated representatives, as we may require, in connection with the development of a motion picture which we propose to be titled 'Batman'" for the sum of $400,000. Signed at the conclusion in blue ballpoint by Michael Keaton. In fine condition.
This interesting document demonstrates Keaton's role in the development of the blockbuster Batman motion picture, which was directed by Tim Burton and featured a soundtrack by Prince. Keaton was ultimately cast for the role as the iconic superhero, much to the chagrin of comic book fans worldwide—he had been typecast as a comedic actor, and some doubted his ability to play a more serious role. Some 50,000 fan letters were sent to Warner Bros. offices protesting the choice, but the studio stuck with him. Despite these initial negative reactions, Keaton's portrayal of Batman generally earned universal praise. He would reprise the role in Batman Returns (1992) and, more recently, The Flash (2023).
