French general (1852–1931) who served as Commander-in-Chief of French forces on the Western Front from the start of World War I until the end of 1916; hailed as the savior of France for his victory at the Marne. Vintage glossy 8.25 x 6 photo of Joffre in uniform, signed in fountain pen, "J. Joffre.” Reverse bears an Underwood & Underwood credit stamp. In fine condition, with light silvering to some of the darker areas of the image. Accompanied by a transmittal letter from his chef d'etat and two original mailing covers.
