Burmese politician, diplomat, and author (born 1945) who is the leader of the National League for Democracy and the first State Counsellor of Myanmar; she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. In recent times, she has been criticized for her inaction in response to the genocide of the Rohingya people, and was overthrown and arrested in 2021 following a coup d'état.
