Rare and impressive collection of 240 vintage postcard photographs offering a comprehensive visual record of the Stockholm 1912 Olympics, all meticulously numbered and arranged in a period leather-bound album, 14.5˝ x 15˝ x 2.5˝, which was presented as a special gift to Swedish diplomat Gerhard Löwen, who served as the Minister Resident in Buenos Aires from 1910 to 1918. Each matte-finish photograph, 5.25 x 3.25 and 3.25 x 5.25, captures a unique image from the historic Stockholm Games, including legendary figures like King Gustaf V and American athlete Jim Thorpe, sundry teams and competitors, moments from the opening ceremony, the medal celebration, and the Swedish Singing Society concert, and many action shots from sporting events like gymnastics, shooting, equestrian, tennis, cycling, football (soccer), aquatics (diving, swimming, water polo), rowing, sailing, and various athletic events like the marathon, shot put, discus, and the pentathlon. As noted, Thorpe appears twice in this collection: at the start of the 1500-meter race in the pentathlon (No. 53) and in a heroic full-length pose as the winner of the pentathlon and the decathlon (No. 90). The album, which is engraved in gilt to the front cover, “Los Juegos Olimpicos De Estocolma 1921,” includes a brad-bound index describing each offered photograph. In very good to fine condition, with wear to the album's spine, and light silvering to the edges of most of the photos.
