The conductor aims to alleviate "the terrible suffering of the civilian population of Poland" after Hitler's 1939 invasion

Two items: a TLS, one page, 8.25 x 11, September 19, 1939, to Mr. and Mrs. William Collier, Jr., in part: "We are inviting some of the outstanding persons of this community to meet…to discuss what can be done to help the terrible suffering of the civilian population of Poland who through no part of their own are suddenly plunged into indescribable misery, both mental and physical"; and a personal check, 8.25 x 3, filled out in type and signed by Leopold Stokowski, payable to cash for $50, June 23, 1943, also endorsed on the reverse by Stokowski. In fine condition.
