Description

Manuscript DS, signed “Victoria R,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 12.5, December 28, 1848. Queen Victoria officially recognizes Chile's counsel at London, in part: "Whereas the President of the Republick of Chile has, by a commission bearing date the Fifth day of September last, constituted Mr. Spencer N. Dickson to be Consul in London for the said Republick of Chile,—and We having thereupon approved of the said Spencer N. Dickson as consul for the said Republick, according to the Commission beforementioned,—Our Will and Pleasure are, and We hereby require that you do receive, countenance, and as there may be occasion, favourably assist him the said Spencer N. Dickson in the exercise of his office." Signed at the head in ink by Queen Victoria and countersigned at the conclusion by Lord Palmerston, then serving as Foreign Secretary. The white paper seal affixed at the upper left remains intact. Impressively mounted and cloth-matted with a color copy of the document's reverse, as well as a portrait of Victoria featuring her pre-printed signature, to an overall size of 35 x 21. In fine condition.
