Description

Rare signed portrait of the genius, presented to the great-grandson of Karl Marx

Scarce vintage semi-glossy 5 x 7 close-up portrait of Albert Einstein by photographer Herman Landshoff, signed and inscribed in the lower border in fountain pen to the French journalist Robert-Jean Longuet, "To Mr. R. Longuet, A. Einstein, 1946.” In fine condition, with a light crease to the left side of the wide lower border.

The great-grandson of Karl Marx, Robert-Jean Longuet met Einstein during an interview for the French Communist newspaper 'Ce Soir' about the peaceful applications of atomic energy. He commented on the scientist's photograph (translated): 'His long white hair falls to his shoulders. He wears an old blue wool sweater, like sailors. He looks nothing like the image we usually have of a mathematician. He looks more like an artist.'

This wonderful portrait of the genius, captured by fellow German-Jewish emigrant Herman Landshoff, is a world famous pose and was adapted for use on the 15-cent U.S. postage stamp issued in 1979 to honor the centenary of Einstein's birth. It is seldom seen in signed examples.
