Description

Union general (1819–1898) who, after a long string of victories, was defeated at Chickamauga and relieved of his command. ALS signed “W. S. Rosecrans,” two pages, 8 x 9.5, May 15, 1872. Handwritten letter to Gen. William Farrar 'Baldy' Smith, written from Mexico.

In full: "Mexico May 15, [18]72

Dear General,

Col. Sever has promised to take charge of this for you.

I inclose you Spanish copies of what has been printed referring to my business here adding that from all I can see that which I ask will be done which I think will ensure the speedy completion of what I propose and in four years renovate Mexico.

The great enterprise you have undertaken and are now carrying forward is of high interest to this country and it is probable that I shall be able to render aid to you occasionally which will of course afford me double pleasure.

My advises and warnings before leaving for this country were so sincere and the ... so at variance with my judgement and subsequent experience that I confidentially suggest to you this question: Is not the agent of the associated Press at Havana coloring the news from this country for corrupt purposes? I have personal knowledge of his offering to color the news for money. You are at liberty say this to our friend Simonton and to add that it seems to me very important for the interest of that rest on the immoveable foundation of truth and justice—and they are many, direct and great ones—that the proper remedy should be applied to this case.

Should all go here with me and advises you can send and any facilities you can properly extend to me over your lines will be appreciated by

Your friend,
W. S. Rosecrans

Gen W. F. Smith
New York"

In fine condition. Accompanied by the original sales folder from early 20th century antiquarian bookseller Ernest Dressel North.
