Third son of Louis Philippe, King of the French, who served as an admiral in the French Navy and on the staff of General George B. McClellan early in the Civil War (1818–1900). ALS signed “Fr. d'Orleans, Prince de Joinville,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 7.25, May 4, 1866. Handwritten letter to Gen. William Farrar 'Baldy' Smith, in part: "I will be very thankfull for the communication you propose. I would have you at once to London to pay my respects to Mrs. Smith and shake hands with you, but I am detained at home for a few days by a slight but troublesome indisposition." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original sales folder from early 20th century antiquarian bookseller Ernest Dressel North.
