Gano, in full: “Thank you for your letter of August 22 which awaited me upon my return to Guam yesterday, subsequent to the surrender ceremonies in the Tokyo Bay Area. I will accept your congratulations on behalf of the officers and men of the Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas who, by their sacrifices and devotion to duty, made possible our brilliant victory. Thank you also for the lyrics to the song, ‘The Stars and Stripes At War,’ dedicated to General MacArthur and me.
