Description

Sought-after 1864 warrant for a presidential pardon by Abraham Lincoln

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, July 27, 1864. President Lincoln directs "the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to a Warrant for the pardon of Thomas S. Cassidy." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by President Abraham Lincoln. The second integral leaf has been professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet; in fine condition, with a very small repair to the lower right edge. President Lincoln liberally indulged in the president's pardon power throughout the Civil War, often intervening on behalf of soldiers at the behest of their wives; a record that has helped to cement his legacy as a kind and humane leader. Boasting Abraham Lincoln's bold, full signature, this is a supremely desirable Civil War-dated warrant for a merciful presidential pardon.
