Description

Souvenir typescript of a chapter excerpt from We Seven, the autobiography of the original Mercury astronauts, one page, 8.5 x 11, signed and inscribed at the conclusion in black felt tip, “To Mary — John Glenn.” The text, as taken from ‘The Mission’ chapter of the book, in part: “The Atlas is an interesting thing to sit on top of when the gantry is gone. You are 74 feet above the ground, and the booster is so tall that it sways slightly in a heavy gust of wind…Everything was proceeding normally, however, I could also hear some of the telltale sounds over the noises in my headset. I could hear the pipes whining and crackling below me as the liquid oxygen flowed into the booster tanks, and I could hear a vibrant hissing noise as the tanks were super-cooled by the cold lox…I talked over the hard line with Paul Donnelly, the NASA test conductor…and with Tom O'Malley of General Dynamics…I also made radio checks with Al Shepard, who would be communicating with me from the Mercury Control Center during the flight…There was a real feeling of excitement in many of the voices - ‘Go’ fever, some people have termed it—and this was heightened at T minus 35 minutes when the decision was made to start putting in the final load of lox. This was one of the landmarks on the countdown, and when I heard that this procedure was beginning I knew that we were almost on our way.” In fine condition.
