Description

"The Big Bang might have to be discarded"

ALS signed “Clyde W. Tombaugh,” one page, 8.5 x 11, New Mexico State University letterhead, May 8, 1990. Handwritten letter to Martha Nieder, in full: “You raise some very important questions. I wonder if there is an edge to the universe. Since Earth-based telescopes have observed galaxies to over 80 per cent of the velocity of light I am not sure that the Red Shift is a velocity of recession — but may be a distance-time effect. The Hubble telescope should easily see beyond this limit. If fainter, more distant galaxies are observed, then the Red Shift cannot be a velocity of recession, because the photons of light could not reach us if the velocity exceeds that of light. I think there will be some surprise discoveries made. The Big Bang might have to be discarded. See Sky & Telescope June issue, of a statement made by [Geoffrey] Burbridge.” In fine condition.
