Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.5 x 6.5, July 10, 1867. President Johnson authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to “a Warrant for the unconditional pardon of Josiah M. Sargent.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Andrew Johnson. In fine condition, with trimmed top and bottom edges. Josiah M. Sargent had been sentenced to nine years imprisonment for robbing a post office. An earlier petition for Sargent’s pardon had either been denied or gone unnoticed by President Abraham Lincoln.
