Description

Partly-printed vellum DS, signed “Franklin Pierce" as president and "Jeffer. Davis" as secretary of war, one page, 12.5 x 16.5, April 30, 1856. President Pierce appoints Henry E. Maynadier as a "First Lieutenant in the Tenth Regiment of Infantry in the service of the United States." Signed at the conclusion by President Pierce and countersigned by Secretary of War Davis. The beige paper seal remains affixed to the upper left. In very good to fine condition, with slight fading and overall wrinkling. Henry Eveleth Maynadier (1830–1868) was a United States Army officer known for his field work in Montana during the Raynolds Expedition and his work to set up peace talks with the Oglala and Brulé tribes at Fort Laramie in 1866. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
