Calhoun writes to John Quincy Adams, forwarding mistaken mail

Prominent American politician (1782–1850) who served as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. He later wielded great power and influence in the Senate as a champion of Southern causes, including slavery. ALS, one page, 9 x 10, no date but circa December 1838. Handwritten letter to "Hon. J. Q. Adams," in full: "The enclosed, I presume, was intended for you, but by some mistake was addressed to me." Also addressed on the reverse in Calhoun's hand, "Hon. J. Q. Adams," and distinctly docketed in Adams's own hand: "Calhoun, J. C. Dec'r 1838." In fine condition, with multiple intersecting folds.
