Description

Three letters from Noel Coward, including two ALSs signed “Noel,” and a TLS signed “All love, Noel.” The two handwritten letters, both one page on his personal 8 x 10 letterhead (17 Gerald Road), are dated February 15, 1936, and October 6, 1938. The earlier letter, addressed to “Jeanne,” reads in part: “I am very glad you posted the letter. I didn’t know it was all about ‘Astonished Heart,’ & as ‘Astonished Heart’ happens to be my favorite & the one I have most trouble with I am terribly glad you thought it so good.” The later ALS, in pencil, sent to “Stevie,” finds Coward dismissing the idea of becoming the “President of the Golf Club because I feel that for that particular position it would be nice to be able to play golf—& as I can’t really play golf it would be rather silly & the Press might get hold of it & it be tiresome.” The TLS, one page 6.25 x 6.5, Savoy Hotel London letterhead, no date, sent to “Darling Jeanne,” thanking her for “your thought of me on the First Night of ‘Sail Away.’” In overall very good to fine condition, with some scattered light creasing and staining.
