Description

Two Civil War-dated items related to the USS Susquehanna and its capture of the British steamer Ann, seized on June 29, 1862, while trying to get into Mobile Bay to deliver a cargo of arms and ammunition to the Confederacy. Includes:

- a DS, signed by a US Treasury auditor, "S.J.W. Tabor," one page, 8 x 10.25, Treasury Office letterhead, April 14, 1864, to John Herlehy, in part: "Herewith you will receive a certificate for $21.49 payable by the Navy Agent at Boston, which sum is due you as your share of prize money accruing from the capture of 'Ann' by the U.S.S. Susquehanna."

- an ALS signed "J.B.F. Osgood," one page, 7.75 x 10, June 24, 1865, in part: "In October 1863 I filed the claim of John Herlehy for prize money due him from the captures made by the 'Susquehanna.' He has received his share of the 'Ann,' 'H. C. Brooks,' 'Prince Alfred,' 'San Juan.' Are there not other sums due him from other prizes?"

In overall fine condition, with light toning, and slight chipping, to the edges.
